Extender Trials for TiO2 Efficiency in White Paint

If you want to use TiO2 more efficiently in white paint, an extender is a trial variable rather than a direct replacement for hiding pigment.

Relia's calcium carbonate and barium sulfate candidates can enter a controlled formulation comparison.

A Factory Proposal for Your Application

Relia manufactures ground, precipitated and selected surface-coated calcium carbonate grades in China through its own factories.

We can discuss the carbonate and BaSO4 candidates alongside your current TiO2 system. Give us the binder, pigment volume, accepted opacity and application conditions. Each proposed filler keeps its own grade specification; the useful comparison is the finished coating at the required acceptance level, not a raw-powder cost comparison alone.

A Clear Efficiency Target

Reducing pigment cost needs a comparison of acceptable coating output, rather than a weight-for-weight replacement claim. XM-300 carbonate and the 0.7 micron BaSO4 grade can be considered beside XM-T288 rutile. Their different roles and particle data help construct a controlled pigment-package trial.

XM-300 carbonate · 6003Average particle size is 1.5 micron and D97 is 3.8 micron. Confirm dispersion in the proposed paint.Use the same particle measurement basis, then review dispersion and the result in your process.
BaSO4 · 5836D50 is listed 0.7 micron, with 98.5% minimum purity. The median alone does not predict hiding efficiency.Use the same particle measurement basis, then review dispersion and the result in your process.
XM-T288 rutile · 5956The catalogue states 94% purity. Keep the actual pigment grade and treatment fixed in the baseline.Keep chemical identity, assay basis and the actual offered grade in the same specification.

A Formulation Trial Matrix

Keep the accepted opacity target and relevant film properties constant while comparing pigment/extender combinations. Record density and formulation basis when translating between mass and volume. We discuss a cost change only after the trial and real purchase terms show what the acceptable coating actually costs.

Particle Preparation and Surface Condition

Filler preparation changes distribution, shape and the surfaces presented to the binder. Those properties affect packing and wetting within the pigment system, but they do not create a universal TiO2-replacement ratio. Keep the supplied distribution and treatment information with the formulation, then compare coverage and viscosity under the same dispersion and film conditions.

  • GCC: dry and wet routes

Relia uses both dry- and wet-grinding routes for GCC. Grinding and classification are connected to the selected powder's particle specification.

  • PCC: crystal formation

Relia produces PCC through calcination, slaking and carbonation. The precipitation route forms new particles rather than only grinding the starting mineral.

  • Selected surface-coated grades

Relia applies surface coating to selected carbonate grades. The actual treatment and intended application remain part of the grade discussion.

  • Defined carbonate checks

Routine batch checks cover whiteness, moisture and purity. Particle size and oil absorption are checked according to the grade or order requirements.

Distribution
Retain average size, D50 and D97 as their actual reported measurements.
Surface
Connect a treatment declaration with the application and absorption or wetting evidence.
Identity
Keep the selected grade and relevant method with the sample comparison.
GCC and PCC follow separate production routes. Surface treatment and inspection requirements are connected to the selected grade.

Cost per Acceptable Coating

Read the raw-material cost together with the coating that meets your requirements. We discuss the approved grades and evidence behind that comparison. No saving is assumed until your formulation and actual purchase terms support it.
