Silica Material Selection for Refractory Formulations

If you need silica for a refractory formulation, first distinguish quartz flour from other materials called silica powder or silica fume.

Relia's listed proposals need a clear mineral identity, phase and particle basis.

Manufacturing Support for This Purchase

Relia manufactures the listed quartz and silica materials in China through its own factories.

Our refractory-material enquiry should identify the exact silica form your formulation requires. Give us the current specification, critical impurities and the relevant processing or service conditions. The proposal should confirm the actual mineral and grade rather than use a broad silica title as evidence of equivalence.

The Required Silica Role

The catalogue uses silica micropowder, microsilica and silica-fume wording across several 325 mesh entries. A high SiO2 figure does not resolve whether the offered material is crystalline silica powder or an amorphous cementitious silica fume. We clarify that identity before recommending a concrete or refractory candidate.

Silica Fume and Silica Micropowder Need Separate Identification

Grade information and how to use it
Review areaListed data and acceptance basisUse in your selection
Grade B · 6554The title describes SiO2 silica micropowder at 325 mesh and 99.0–99.5% purity. Do not assume silica-fume identity.Use the same particle measurement basis, then review dispersion and the result in your process.
Microsilica · 6546A 325 mesh industrial entry for paint, plastics and electronics. Its title alone does not establish pozzolanic suitability.Use the same particle measurement basis, then review dispersion and the result in your process.
Silica-fume entries6526 and 6525 use silica-fume wording with 325 mesh. Request phase, source and relevant activity/physical evidence.Use the same particle measurement basis, then review dispersion and the result in your process.
Acceptance routeConfirm the intended material identity and the applicable concrete or refractory tests before agreeing a sample specification.Keep chemical identity, assay basis and the actual offered grade in the same specification.
Listed figures describe catalogue entries. Agree the actual offered specification and measurement basis.

The Refractory Comparison

Use a material with resolved phase and identity in the intended mix comparison. Retain its analysis and relevant physical or activity evidence with the test results. We keep a crystalline filler proposal separate from an amorphous silica-fume proposal even when both carry a high silica-content headline.

Manufacturing and grade controls

Different Origins Require Different Specifications

Grinding and classification of quartz produce a different material from silica fume recovered from a high-temperature industrial process. Their origins, structures and particle populations should not be merged into one production story. Confirm the proposed identity and preparation route, then compare chemistry, phase and distribution against the refractory formulation's own acceptance method.

  1. Identify the material

Quartz flour and silica fume are different proposals rather than two sizes of a shared product.

  2. Confirm how it is formed

Quartz powder uses mineral preparation; silica fume is recovered from an industrial high-temperature process.

  3. Define the particle evidence

The offered identity determines which phase, distribution and surface measurements are relevant.

  4. Connect to refractory use

Compare the actual chemistry and material behaviour under the formulation's required test conditions.

Origin
Keep the actual source form explicit in the proposal.
Phase
Do not infer crystalline or amorphous structure from a generic silica title.
Evaluation
Use the required refractory or binder test for the identified material.
Keep the proposed grade's production route and measured acceptance limits together in the material specification.

From sample to supply

A Material-Identity Gate

The grade, sample and technical file need to describe the same proposed material. We discuss supply after that identity is clear. Conflicting fields remain points to resolve rather than assumptions built into a replacement recommendation.
